WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team picked up its third consecutive victory on Saturday, Dec. 15, with a 78-74 overtime triumph over Westminster at the Henry Memorial Center.Â
With the win, the Presidents improve to 5-5 on the season with a 3-1 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Today's triumph also gives W&J its first three-game win streak since the 2012-13 season and it halted the Red & Black's eight-game losing streak against the Titans.Â
The Presidents held the lead for much of the first half, building it to as high as 11 points, 21-10, with 8:51 left in the stanza with a quick 11-2 run. Both
Primo Zini (Morgantown, W. Va./Trinity Christian) and
Okikiola Agbale (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) fueled the surge with four points apiece. Â
Owning a 33-31 lead heading into the break, W&J saw its advantage slip away quickly to begin the stanza. Westminster went on a tear to start the second half, taking a 50-41 lead of its own after the first eight minutes. The Red & Black answered, however, ending the half on a 25-16 run to force overtime.Â
In the extra frame, a back-and-forth affair swung the Presidents' way with a corner three-pointer by
Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) with 47 seconds left in the game. DeVito gave W&J a 75-74 lead that it would hold on to for the remainder of the contest.Â
As a team, W&J maintained a .500 field goal percentage (27-of-54) in the bout, compared to .439 (29-of-66) for Westminster. The Red & Black also hit 11 three-points, compared to the Titans' nine.Â
Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) led the way for the Presidents offensively, as he poured in 18 points on 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) shooting from behind the arc. Seemann has tallied double-digit points in each of the last five games.Â
Zini finished second on the team with 15 points, six of which came in overtime.
Ashton Jones (Kensington, Md./Sidwell Friends (D.C.)) rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with a career-high 10 points.Â
The Presidents will return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 18, for a 6 p.m. tilt against Carnegie Mellon at the Henry Memorial Center.
