CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Senior
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) banked in a layup while being fouled in the final seconds to give the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team a 63-62 overtime win over Saint Vincent in the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals on Friday night, Feb. 23.
Â
The Presidents' overall record improves to 22-4 while the Bearcats' close their season with an 18-9 mark.
Â
Trailing by a point with 11 seconds remaining in overtime, the Bearcats missed a pair of free throws, with the second miss being rebounded by W&J's
Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville). Seto passed the ball out to Moore on the wing who started racing up in the floor. Moore drove through traffic, laid the ball off the glass and into the bucket, while being fouled in the process, to give the Presidents the lead with four seconds to play.
Â
After Moore couldn't convert the three-point play, the Bearcats were unable to get the potential go-ahead shot off in time as the final buzzer sounded just before a shot attempt.
Â
Saint Vincent opened the extra frame by hitting a three pointer to cap a 16-0 run spanning from the 6:39-mark in the fourth into the opening seconds of overtime.
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) responded for the Presidents with a layup before the Bearcats scored five straight points to run their lead to an overtime-high six points. A Moore layup, followed by a bucket from
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reduced the W&J deficit to two points with 35 seconds to play.
Â
The Bearcats then went 1-for-2 at the free throw line which was followed by another Parker layup with 24 seconds left to set the stage for the thrilling final seconds.
Â
The Presidents entered the final quarter with an eight-point lead and increased the margin to 13 points with 6:39 remaining in regulation before the Bearcats rattled off 13 unanswered points to send the game into overtime.
Â
Through more than the first half of action, both sides fought hard and went back and forth as the game saw 10 lead changes and five ties through over 22 minutes of play with the neither side gaining a lead greater than five points. With the score tied 31-31 in the third, however, W&J found its stride as it scored seven straight points, followed by a four-point response from Saint Vincent, before scoring 10 more unanswered points to close the third period up eight points, 46-38.
Â
Moore nearly recorded a triple-double on the night, finishing the game with nine points, eight rebounds and 10 assists, her first game this season with at least 10 helpers and the third such game of her career.
Â
Parker tallied a game-high 25 points on 11-of-23 shooting from the field, including 3-for-9 from long range, and nine rebounds, narrowly missing her eighth double-double of the season, to go along with a contest-high four steals. It is third time this season that Parker has scored 25 points and the seventh time scoring 20 points or more.
W&J outrebounded Saint Vincent, 39-35, and held advantages in points in the paint (40-26) and second chance points (11-5).
Â
The Presidents advance to the PAC Championship game for the second time in three years and will face Thomas More for the third time this season on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 4:00 p.m.
