Big third quarter propels W&J to 84-49 win at Chatham

PITTSBURGH – A 22-0 run during the third quarter helped the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team to an 84-49 win over Chatham on Saturday, Feb. 3, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The Presidents improve to 18-3 overall on the season and 12-2 in PAC play while also improving 30-0 all-time against Chatham.

After both teams split the first 12 points of the game, the Presidents took off on a 20-2 run, spanning from the first to second quarter, to open up an 18-point lead. The run was fueled by Taley Dunaway (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) who scored 10 points during the run on 4-for-4 shooting from the field, including two made three-pointers.

Over the final eight minutes of the second quarter, W&J outscored Chatham, 14-10, to head into halftime with a 40-18 lead.

The Cougars began the third quarter by edging the Presidents 5-2 in scoring before W&J scored 22 unanswered points to put the game out of reach. During the run, the Presidents made 9-of-10 shots from the field, including all four three-point attempts, and held the Cougars to 0-for-10 shooting. Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the charge with nine points during the run while scoring 11 points total in the third quarter.

The Presidents' largest lead of the game was 44 points at the 7:20-mark of the fourth quarter before the Cougars closed the game on an 18-9 run.

Gilbert finished with a game-high 18 points in the contest on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor to go along with a season high tying five assists plus a pair of steals. Dunaway tied her career high with 16 points as she shot 6-for-9 overall and 4-for-6 from long range, tying her career high for made three-pointers.

Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) tallied 10 points and connected on 5-of-6 shot attempts and added five assists to her night, putting her career total at 348 which breaks a tie with Ann Aigner (1986-90) for the sixth most assists in program history.

Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) rounded out the double-digit scoring Presidents as the freshman scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and pulled down five rebounds and dished out three assists.

The Presidents shot a season-high 60.7 percent from the floor and limited the Cougars to 28.3 percent shooting overall, the sixth time this season holding their opponents to less than 30 percent shooting. The team's 60.7 percent shooting percentage is the highest single-game mark since posting a 63.1 percent effort in a 91-58 win against Saint Vincent on Jan. 7, 2006. The Presidents also held advantages in bench points (41-10), points off turnovers (26-13) and total rebounds (41-33).

W&J will return home for its next game on Wednesday, Feb. 7, when it looks for the season sweep of Thiel at 6:00 p.m.
