CLERMONT, Fla. -- A pair of losses met the Washington & Jefferson softball team to open action at the 2018 PFX Spring Games as the Presidents began the day on Saturday with a 9-3 loss to UMass Dartmouth before being dealt a 10-2 setback against Ohio Wesleyan.
W&J fell behind 5-0 through two innings in the opener against UMD, before plating its first run of the trip in the top of the third. With one out, center fielder
Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) singled and stole second before advancing to third on a ground out by right fielder
Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and then scoring on an RBI double by designated player
Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth).
The Presidents cut the margin to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to get within striking distance. Second baseman
Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) doubled to lead off the frame and Parker reached on a bunt single to put runners at the corners with no outs. The duo then executed a double steal to get Johnson home and Doty drove in Parker with a double down the left-field line. The Corsairs pulled away by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth to make the eventual final margin of 9-3.
Parker had three of W&J's seven hits in the first game, scoring twice as well. Third baseman
Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) supplied the final not recorded by Parker, Johnson, Doty or Helffrich.
Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) suffered the defeat, going 4.0-plus innings and allowing 10 hits and eight runs (five earned).
Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up just one run (earned).
The Presidents recorded 10 hits against Ohio Wesleyan, but left 10 runners on base in the defeat.
After falling behind 4-0 through two innings, W&J shrunk the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Johnson doubled and went to third on a two-out single by Doty. Doty then stole second to give the Presidents two runners in scoring position with two outs. Helffrich followed with a two-run double to left to get W&J on the board.
Johnson had three hits in game two, while Helffrich and shortstop
Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) each notched two hits. Doty, Lapia and first baseman
Danielle Kochka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) added single base knocks.
Fuertes started game two for her first start of the year and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 5.0 innings. Andres pitched the final frame and allowed two runs on one hit.
W&J plays twice on Sunday morning, beginning with a 9:00 a.m. contest against Southern Maine, followed by an 11:30 a.m. match-up against Allegheny. Both games will be at the Hancock Park complex in Clermont.
