CLERMONT, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson dropped a pair of games on its second day at Hancock Park as part of the 2018 PFX Spring Games.
The Presidents combined for 23 hits on the day, but dropped an 11-5 decision against Southern Maine before falling by a 7-3 count to Allegheny.
In the opener against the Huskies, freshman third baseman
Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) delivered the big blast of the day, belting her first career home run down the left-field line in the third inning.
She finished with two of W&J's 14 hits in the opener, while center fielder
Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour), shortstop
Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) and first baseman
Danielle Kochka (Moneroeville, Pa./Gateway) all had doubles as part of their three hits apiece. Second baseman
Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) added a pair of doubles in joining the multi-hit group.
Against the Gators in the night cap, W&J opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. Johnson led off with a single and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Parker. Designated player
Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard) singled to put runners on the corners and then stole second before Helffrich walked to load the bases. All three runners moved up on a wild pitch, which allowed Johnson to cross the plate. Kochka capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly, 2-0.
Allegheny got on the board in the top of the second, but no runs scored until W&J added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Pitcher
Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led off with a single and pinch-runner
Julia Schaffer (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher
Lexie Creyer (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) before scoring on a double by Johnson, 3-1. The Gators responded by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the victory.
Johnson concluded game two with three hits and Andres also notched a multi-hit game with a pair of base knocks.
The Presidents will play Farmingdale State (N.Y.) and Worcester State (Mass.) at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19.
