WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Rocco Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) both scored four goals as the Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team raced past Bethany, 16-4.
The victory keeps the Presidents undefeated in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference at 3-0, while improving their overall mark to 4-6. The Bison fall to 0-3 in the ORLC and 2-5 overall.
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) joined the four-goal scorers with a hat trick of his own, while
Dylan Shepherd (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) notched his first career multi-goal game with a pair of markers. Ward's eight points on the afternoon matched his season high, as the sophomore also handed out four assists. The four goals for Ruscitto were the second-straight game he's matched his career best.
After the Bison took a 1-0 lead 29 seconds into play, W&J answered back with three goals to make it 3-1 before a man-up goal by Bethany brought it within 3-2. The Presidents tallied the final two scores of the first quarter to lead by a 5-2 count through 15 minutes. Bethany got on the board first in the second quarter (13:28), but two more W&J goals made it a 7-3 game. W&J pulled away with 11 consecutive goals to push the lead out to 16-3 before the Bison found the back of the net with under a minute left in the game.
Joseph Tritschler (New Kensington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) led all players with nine ground balls, while Ward and
Michael Aaron Pray III (Gaithersburg, Md./Maret School (D.C.)) each picked up six ground balls. Pray finished 18-of-24 on face-offs, his sixth time this season winning double-digit face-offs.
Jacob Duda (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led the game with four caused turnovers, with Tritschler knocking away three.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) recorded his seventh game with double-digit saves this season, turning away 11 shots on the day in improving to 4-6.
In the game, W&J doubled up the Bison on shots, 51-24, and shots on goal, 34-15, and nearly did so on ground balls, 49-28.
W&J will travel to Grove City in ORLC action for the first-ever meeting between the two programs at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.
