Sciullo becomes career triples leader as W&J sweeps DH versus Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Ryan Sciullo (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) became the Presidents' career triples leader as the Washington & Jefferson baseball team swept a two-game Presidents' Athletic Conference series against Waynesburg by scores of 11-1 and 4-1, respectively.

Sciullo's record-breaking triple came in the first inning of game one as he sent the first pitch he saw to deep center for the 19th of his career, passing Josh Staniscia as the W&J all-time leader.

The two wins move the Presidents to 19-9-1 on the year with an 11-1 PAC record, while Waynesburg falls to 7-19 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

The scoring for game one started in the second inning when Justin Griffin (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) reached on a lead-off single and then advanced to third off a double from Spencer Howell (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood). Dante Dalesandro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Griffin and moved Howell to third. Joey Bolick (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) singled in the next at bat to score Howell.

After a single from Luke Zahren (Ingomar, Pa./North Allegheny), runners were on the corners for Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius), who then sent an 0-1 pitch deep into left field for a three-run homer, tying the team-high with his third of the year.

W&J added a run per inning in its next three frames of work. In the third, Griffin reached on a single and was driven home on a double from Dalesandro. The fourth inning started with a Zahren double, and the second baseman was then plated by a single from Socha. Mark Merlino (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) walked to lead off the fifth, and then after a single and a ground out, he scored on another sacrifice fly from Dalesandro.

The final three runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Socha reached on a one-out single and then stole second before a double from Dan Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) brought him home. Trettel stole third and then scored on a wild pitch. Sciullo tallied the final run with a home run to right field, his third of the year.

In game two, runs were harder to come by as the Presidents were held to just one hit in the first two innings. In the third, Zahren walked to lead off the inning before a single from Socha put runners on first and second. After a fly out, both runners stole a base, and a sacrifice fly by Sciullo plated Zahren. Three two-out singles then scored two more runs as Merlino singled in Socha, then was moved to third by a single from Griffin, and eventually scored on a single from Howell.

The Presidents tallied their final run in the bottom of the sixth when Howell led off with a double, and then a wild pitch followed by an errant throw from the catcher allowed him to score. Waynesburg got one back in the top of the ninth after an error allowed the lead-off man to reach and then score on a double two batters later, but the Presidents were able to settle into a groove as Will Bowser (Burgettstown, Pa./Madonna (W.Va.)) forced two ground balls to secure the win.

Ben Marsico (Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) earned the nod for game one and pitched a complete seven inning game as he allowed only one run on six hits while fanning five batters.

Santino Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./OLSH) started game two and pitched seven scoreless innings as he allowed only two hits and struck out a pair. Clay Martin (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) worked an inning of perfect baseball while setting two batters down on strikes. Bowser then finished the game while giving up one hit and earning a strikeout.

Socha and Griffin led the team in game one with three hits and two runs scored, as well as three RBI for Socha. Trettel, Sciullo and Zahren each had two knocks, and totaled five runs with Zahren accounting for two.

Howell and Dalesandro were the multi-hit batters in game two, both with a pair. Other batters tallying hits in the nightcap were Socha, Merlino, Griffin and Bolick.

As a team, W&J stole eight bases today, six of which coming in game two. Trettel led the team with three on the day.

The Presidents will face No. 10 Case Western Reserve tomorrow, April 19, at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians at 2:00 p.m.
