Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

W&J bests Westminster, 10-8, in back-and-forth affair

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – A run of five straight goals from the second to third quarters led the Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team to a 10-8 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference win over Westminster on Saturday afternoon, April 21.

The Presidents improve to 6-9 overall with the win and 5-3 in league play while the Titans fall to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the ORLC.

Patrick Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) opened the scoring in the contest with a goal at the 9:00 mark off an assist from Grant Allison (Venetia, Pa./Carson Long Military Institute). The Titans came back with three of the next four goals of the game to claim a 3-2 lead with 4:36 to play in the second quarter before the Presidents scored five straight goals, spanning into the third quarter, to take a 7-3 lead. The 5-0 W&J run was powered by Pat Heidecker (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) who contributed four of the five scores.

Westminster cut the Presidents' lead back down to one with three consecutive goals in the final two minutes of the third before Brunner and Heidecker pushed W&J back up to a three-goal lead with 8:16 remaining in the game.

Two of the final three goals in the game were scored by the Titans but it was not enough as the Presidents held on to the final two-goal lead.

Heidecker scored a career-high six times in the game to lead the W&J attack while his six points in the contest were one shy of his career best. Brunner found the back of the net three times for his fourth hat trick of the season. Brendan Tribeck (Enola, Pa./Trinity) assisted on three goals for the second consecutive game and the fifth time overall this season.

Michael Aaron Pray III (Gaithersburg, Md./Maret School (D.C.)) won seven face-offs in the game and now owns the single-season program record for face-offs won with 175, breaking the previous record of 169 held by Russ Kalkstein (2005).

Goalkeeper Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) led the defense with six ground balls while Joseph Tritschler (New Kensington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) scooped up five as the two headed a group of five Presidents with three or more ground balls and nine players with at least two.

Cohen earned his sixth win of the season in cage, stopping 14 shots in the game. His 14 saves moved Cohen ahead of Andrew Reid ('07) and into sole possession of third place on the W&J all-time saves list with 407 in his career.

W&J outshot Westminster, 51-36, in the contest and put 25 shots on net in addition to winning the turnover battle as the Titans turned the ball over 27 times to just 14 turnovers for the Presidents.

The Presidents' next game will take place at Saint Vincent on Wednesday, April 25, in a 4:00 p.m. ORLC battle.
