SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Presidents received goals from three different players and sophomore goalie
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) posted a shutout in her first career action as Washington & Jefferson opened up the 2018 field hockey season with a 3-0 win at Wittenberg.
The victory marks the 11th time W&J has won its season-opener in head coach Jomara Coghlan's 12 years leading the program and avenges last season's 2-1 loss against Wittenberg to kick off what would become an Empire 8 championship-winning campaign.
Freshman
Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) needed just 1:24 into her college career to open the scoring and post the eventual game-winning goal. Senior
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) gave W&J an insurance goal at the 50:47-mark in the second half when she turned a penalty corner opportunity into a Presidents' tally. It was her first goal of the season and 34th of her career, while also giving her 83 points, which moves the All-Region performer into a tie for fourth place with Erin Barno (2009-12) on the W&J career points list. The final goal of the evening was netted with just under nine minutes remaining when sophomore
Ashley Overton (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) collected her first goal of the year and fifth in 19 career matches off an assist by senior
Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison).
Israel had to make just two saves on the night, one in each half, as the Presidents' defense yielded just four shots on the evening. Boyd led all players with five shots, including four on goal, and Kunkle added two shots. Six other Presidents chipped in one shot apiece.
W&J will host Shenandoah in nonconference action on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. in the 2018 home opener at Cameron Stadium.
