WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The goals came early and often for the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team in its 10-0 victory over Hilbert in the 2018 season opener on Friday, August 31, at Alexandre Stadium.
It was a historic evening for the Presidents, as they had not scored 10 goals in a match since defeating Lake Erie by a 12-0 final score on September 8, 2001.
Freshman
Thomas Einolf (Carlisle, Pa./Middletown) led all players with six points on two goals and two assists. Fellow underclassmen
Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) and
Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) also matched Einolf with a game-high two goals. It marked the first time that all three of these Presidents scored multiple goals in a game.
In total, seven W&J players found the back of the net. In addition to seniors
Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) and
Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) adding to their career scoring totals with one goal in the bout,
Collin Winters (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and
Drew Williams (Jefferson Twp, Pa./North Pocono) each registered their first career goals.
The scoring began in the ninth minute with a goal by Fetterman. The sophomore received a pass from
Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park) inside the box and shot a laser into the bottom-left corner. Kotkiewicz made the initial pass to Payne to also earn an assist on the play.
Just over two minutes later, in the 11th minute, Mokrzan gave the Presidents a 2-0 advantage with his first tally of the season.
Nicholas Maknoon (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) lofted a cross into the box that Mokrzan was able to head into the back of the net.
W&J sealed the contest over the remaining 34 minutes of the first half, as the Presidents scored four times to take a 6-0 lead into the break. Komaniak tallied his first two career goals in that stretch, a pair of strikes from deep outside the box.
The Red & Black continued to attack in the second half, adding four more goals to cement the nonconference victory. Einolf opened his collegiate scoring with two goals in the first 12 minutes of the half. The first was set up by a cross from
Thomas Davidson (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) into the box and the second was off a free kick about three yards outside the box.
Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started the contest and allowed zero goal in 45 minutes of play to earn the win. Sophomore
Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) entered in relief at halftime and made a save on the lone shot on goal he faced.
The Presidents return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 1, for a nonconference tilt against Wooster. The match is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
