WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to Wooster in a physical contest that featured nine combined yellow cards on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Alexandre Stadium.
In addition to being the Presidents' second game of the 2018 campaign, it marked the 500th career match that W&J head coach
Ian McDonald has coached the Red & Black. In a pregame ceremony, the team's captains awarded the 28th-year coach with a plaque to commemorate his achievement.
The loss drops the Presidents' record on the season to 1-1 following yesterday's convincing 10-0 victory over Hilbert in the season opener.
Wooster opened the bout's scoring in the 22nd minute of the first half with a free-kick goal from about five yards outside the box. The Fighting Scots added one more tally about two-and-a-half minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
W&J had chances to draw the deficit closer, as
Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) and
Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) each registered a shot on goal in the match. Unfortunately for the Presidents, Wooster's keeper was able to corral both attempts to maintain the clean sheet.
On the other side of the field,
Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Red & Black and made three saves.
The Presidents return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4, with their first road game of the year against Pitt-Greensburg. The bout is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. at the Bobcats' Ridilla Field.
