WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A ninth-minute goal by
Julie Halula (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) helped guide the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Ohio Wesleyan in W&J's 2018 opener on Sunday, Sept. 2. Â
Today's result marked the second consecutive season that the Presidents and the Bishops battled to a 1-1 stalemate to begin the year. The bout also kicked off the head-coaching tenure of
Scott Gerseny.
Halula's tally, the fifth of her collegiate career, was set up by a long breakaway pass from
Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area). Halula corralled the ball and beat the opposing keeper to the lower-left corner.Â
W&J's 1-0 lead held for a majority of the bout until Ohio Wesleyan answered in the 89th minute to force overtime.Â
Florysak and Halula were at the center of the offense, as both seniors led the team with five shots apiece. In total, the Presidents recorded 17 shots, seven of which were on goal.Â
Rookie goalkeeper
Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) made 11 saves in her collegiate debut, the most saves since
Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./ Berwick Area) posted 13 against Chatham on Oct. 1, 2016.Â
The Red & Black kick off the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5, with a 7 p.m. bout against Frostburg State at Alexandre Stadium.Â
