W&J splits home-opening PAC Tri-Match

WASHINGTON, PA. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team swept Thiel after dropping a 3-2 match to Westminster at its home-opening Presidents' Athletic Conference Tri-Match at the Henry Memorial Center on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The first match of the day, saw the Presidents fall 3-2 against Westminster. W&J held a two-sets-to-none lead over the Titans, who are now 16-1 overall and 4-0 in the PAC, but were unable to take one of the final three sets. The set scores in the match were 16-25, 22-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-13. With the win over the Tomcats (25-18, 25-16, 25-10), W&J's record sits at 8-6 overall and 5-1 in conference. With a pair of setbacks, Thiel is 7-9 overall and 2-4 in league play. 

Against the Titans, Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) paced the Red & Black with 19 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) finished second on the team with 10 kills. Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) orchestrated the attack with 51 assists, which tied a season high, on the team's 56 kills. 

Defensively, five Presidents recorded double-digit digs, led by Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) with 20. With 12 digs, O'Brien notched her seventh double-double of the year. Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Vincentian Academy) and Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) logged 15 and 14 digs, respectively, which are new season highs for each. Lydic also paced the team with six blocks in the contest. 

In the sweep of Thiel, Bernesser and Lydic again led the team in kills, this time with 10 and nine, respectively. O'Brien completed her day with 36 more assists in the win over the Tomcats.

Defensively, Coughlin paced all players with 15 digs, while Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa /Vincentian Academy) was not far behind with a season-high 14. Bernesser and Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) each logged a match-high four blocks in the bout. 

The Presidents' next match will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 25, when they battle Point Park in road nonleague action.
