Eich puts W&J on her back, leads Presidents to 3-2 comeback win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- After falling behind 2-0 against Geneva, Washington & Jefferson volleyball senior Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) led the Presidents all the way back for a 3-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference win.

Eich recorded 17 kills -- at a .517 hitting percentage -- in the final three sets to help push W&J to the victory. The 17 kills matched her previous career high, but with the six she posted combined in the first two sets she established a new career benchmark of 23, the second most in the PAC this season. The PAC's leader in hitting percentage also connected at a .478 clip on the evening, with just one error in 46 total attempts. Defensively, she added five blocks, four of which came in the third and fourth sets.

Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) connected on 16 kills at a .441 percentage, marking the sixth time this season she's been in double digits. Tied for the PAC lead in blocks, she turned away the Golden Tornadoes seven times (two solo), including five over the course of the final three sets. Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy) added a career high with 15 kills (.294 hitting percentage), including seven kills in the third set alone, plus added three blocks. Bridget Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) matched her season best with eight kills.

Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) set a new career high by directing the W&J offense for 61 assists, the new high total in the PAC -- and tied for the eighth most in the country -- this season. After handing out assists by set of 11, 14, 16 and 10, the junior assisted on 10 of the Presidents' 12 kills in the decisive fifth set. With her performance, she moved within 65 assists of becoming just the fourth President to reach 2,000 assists in a career (third in rally-scoring era).

Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) went over the 1,000-dig mark for her career by registering a career-best 41 to win the battle of the sister liberos as her sister, Kayla, was Geneva's libero and recorded 36 digs. The 41 digs are second in the PAC this season. Four other Presidents reached double figures in digs in the match: Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) led the four with 20, while Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) added 19, Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) contributed 15 and O'Brien posted the double-double with 13.

The victory pushes the Presidents to 9-7 overall, with a 6-1 mark in PAC play. W&J will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 with a nonconference tri-match at Allegheny (11 a.m.) with Baldwin Wallace (1 p.m.).
