ALTOONA, Pa. -- A 90th-minute tally by
Marcy Saldivar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) guided Washington & Jefferson women's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Penn State Altoona in nonconference action on Thursday, Sept. 27.
With tonight's win, the Red & Black improve to 3-5-1 on the season. All three Presidents' victories this year have been in 1-0 contests, and all three saw W&J score with less than one minute left in regulation or overtime. Altoona, on the other hand, drops to 3-5-1 through its first nine games.
In the fleeting minutes of regulation, Saldivar led a break attempt by the Presidents, launching a 30-yard bomb that found the top shelf of the net. The goal is the second of Saldivar's career and her first in 2018.
Saldivar and
Patty Eshenbaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the W&J offense with four of the team's five shots on goal. In total, six Presidents recorded a shot in the bout, with the team logging nine overall.
In goal, both
Beth Boyles (Dundee, Ohio/Hiland) and
Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) saw time for the Presidents, with each playing a half. Boyles started and made one save, while Watkins came in during the second half and made five stops to earn her second win of the season.
The Red & Black kick off Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 29, with a home tilt against Thiel. The contest, which is slated to start at 1 p.m., will also serve as Senior Day for the Presidents.
