Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Boyd's two scores help W&J remain undefeated with 2-1 win over St. John Fisher

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored both goals for the Presidents as the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team pushed itself into the driver's seat in the Empire 8 with a 2-1 win over St. John Fisher.

W&J stays atop the Empire 8 standings as it improves to 8-0 on the season, with a 3-0 mark in the league. In this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 20 poll, the Presidents were the top team in the "Others Receiving Votes" category. Fisher falls to 7-2 this year and 2-1 in conference action.

Boyd gave the Presidents a 1-0 lead 25:02 into play when she maneuvered past the SJFC goalie and finished to the lower right corner of the cage. The Cardinals, however, responded just 5:01 later when Lauren Fazio took a pass across the front of the cage from Bre Socker and Fazio finished into the open cage. The 1-1 margin stood at halftime, with Fisher holding a 6-4 edge on shots and the two teams being even with four penalty corners apiece.

Six minutes into the second half, Fisher had an offensive situation where they were attacking with a three-on-one breakaway, but Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came out of her cage and challenged Socker, winning the battle with a diving stop and squashing the scoring opportunity.

With less than 12 minutes remaining, Boyd dribbled in from around the 25-yard line and drew Fisher's goalie out of her cage and was able to juke past her and record the game-winning goal high and inside the far post.

Boyd's six shots led all players, with four of them landing on target. Israel made four saves on the day, the most in her career, and improved to 6-0 despite seeing her scoreless streak snapped at just over 380 minutes.
