Volleyball tops Bethany and Waynesburg to begin PAC play

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team picked up victories over both Bethany and Waynesburg to begin the Presidents' Athletic Conference portion of its 2018 schedule.

W&J topped the Bison in the opener by a 3-1 (11-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-20) final score, before besting the Yellow Jackets in straights sets (25-9, 25-16, 25-18).

In the first match of the day against Bethany, Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) led the Red & Black with 12 kills, while Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) and Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) also tallied double-digit kills with 10 apiece. Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) orchestrated the offense by assisting on 32 of the teams 43 kills.

On defense, Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) logged 22 digs, a season high for the junior. Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) also pitched in with 11 digs. Lydic recorded a match-high two blocks.

Lydic kept her strong play up against Waynesburg in the second tilt, as she tallied 13 kills in the three-set contest. O'Brien added 24 assists against the Yellow Jackets to give her 56 on the afternoon.

Defensively, Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy) registered four blocks to lead all players, while Coughlin paced W&J with 16 digs.

The Presidents will continue PAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 12, with a road tilt against Grove City at 7:00 p.m.
