WOOSTER, Ohio -- Playing with just 10 players for over 87 minutes of today's contest against Wooster, the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat against the Fighting Scots in nonconference action.
The reason that the Presidents found themselves down a player so early in the match was a red card called on starting goalkeeper
Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi). The freshman came out of her box to stop a breakaway chance by Wooster and made contact with the offensive player and was subsequently handed the red card.
With the extra player on the pitch, the Fighting Scots increased their intensity by scoring twice in the first half on 10 shots. Wooster added two more goals in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 4-0 advantage.
The Presidents got on the scoreboard in the 71st minute, when
Michelle Cicalese (Mount Olive, N.J./Pope John XXIII) buried a deflected ball into the back of the opposing net to set the final score at 4-1. The goal is Cicalese's first as a member of the Red & Black.
W&J will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 12, when it plays Kenyon at 7:30 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
