Dylan Mayanja (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) recorded his first collegiate hat trick and junior
Alvaro Viadas added a pair of scores as the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team earned a 5-4 road victory over Chatham University Saturday night in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match.
The victory keeps W&J unblemished in conference play, as the Red and Black moves to 2-0-1 in the league and 5-6-2 overall. The loss drops Chatham to 0-1-2 in the league and 3-6-3 overall. The five-goal performance is the most scored by W&J in a conference match since 2016.
Mayanja opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the sixth minute of play. However, the host Cougars answered with penalty kick goal to tie the score at 1-1 in the 11th minute of play. The score remained tied at 1-1 after 45 minutes of play as the game entered halftime.
Chatham would score just 45 seconds into the second half to take a 2-1 lead over the Presidents.
Mayanja would help W&J respond in a big way, as the first year player scored back-to-back goals in less than two minutes of play to push the visitors back in front at 3-2. His second goal of the match, which came off an assist from sophomore
Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) in the 51st minute tied the score. Then Mayanja tacked on his third goal, this one in the 52nd minute, off assists from Komaniak and senior
Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park).
The lead was short-lived as Chatham countered with a second goal by Emmet Taub, the goal in the 54th minute, tied the score at 3-3.
Viadas put W&J back in front with an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute. Viadas then added a penalty kick goal in the 69th minute to give W&J some cushion with a 5-3 edge.
The Cougars did not go quietly, as Ren Matsushita cut the lead back to one with a goal in the 71st minute. After a barrage of second half goals, the Presidents were able to make the 5-4 score stand up for the conference victory.
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) picked in the victory in goal, as the sophomore recorded three saves in 90 minutes. Mayanja's big performance gives him four goals, an assist and nine points for the week. Meanwhile, Viadas registered seven points (two goals, one assist) during a 2-0 week for W&J. Komaniak, the PAC's leader in assist, recorded multiple assists in a game for the second time this season.
W&J hosts Waynesburg University for a league match on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Start time is slated for 6 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
