Women’s Soccer Battles to 1-1 Tie at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team surrendered a goal in the first five minutes but rallied with a goal in the final five minutes regulation to notch a 1-1 tie at Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Saturday evening.

W&J (3-7-2, 1-0-2 PAC), playing in its first road conference game of the season, earned a point in its third-consecutive conference game to keep pace with the Chatham (4-4-4, 1-0-2 PAC) in the league standings.

Chatham took an early advantage with a goal in the fifth minute fired into the lower left corner of the goal.

The Presidents found an equalizer late in the second half. Following a throw in along the left sideline, Courtney Crivelli (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) played a ball through the Cougar's backline towards a cutting Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington). Chatham's goalkeeper Ashley Bergman raced out to deflect the pass, but could not possess the ball. Wies Achtereekte (Deventer, The Netherlands) collected the loose ball and fired home the game-tying goal in the 86th minute.

Despite the early tally for the Cougars, W&J outshot Chatham 7-3 in shots on goal over the first 45 minutes of the contest but still trailed 1-0.

In the second half Chatham held a 7-4 (5-3 SOG) edge in shots, but it was the Presidents notching the lone goal of the period.

Over the course of both overtime periods, Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) made seven saves to keep the Presidents alive while Crivelli, Marcy Saldivar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) and McKenna Lewis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) fired shots on goal in the game's final 20 minutes.

Watkins finished the evening with a season-best 14 saves in the draw. Hahn led the Presidents with four shots, three on target.

Chatham held a slight 20-17 advantage in shots and a 15-14 edge in shots on goal. W&J collected five corner kicks to Chatham's four.

The Presidents continue PAC play Wednesday evening with a home matchup with Waynesburg at 8:00 p.m.
