WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team had its six-game winning streak halted by a 1-0 shootout loss to Empire 8 opponent Houghton on Saturday afternoon.
For the seventh-consecutive game the Presidents did not allow a goal during the run of play, going the full 60 minutes of regulation and both overtimes keeping the Highlanders off the scoreboard.
W&J raced out to a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five penalty shootout with conversions by
Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md/Bohemian Manor) and
Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and three-consecutive saves by
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).
Houghton converted on consecutive attempts while keeping the Presidents from scoring a walk-off stroke, sending the game into sudden death strokes. Following a Houghton save, Houghton's Grace McBride delivered the game-winner for the Highlanders.
Both teams had prime opportunities to win the game in overtime, as Houghton fired eight shots in the first overtime. However Israel made five saves to keep the match scoreless and the Presidents survived eight penalty corners by the Highlanders.
In the second overtime, W&J fired four shots on goal with Houghton's goalie making three saves and collecting a team defensive save. On the other end, Houghton hit the right post on a scoring opportunity following one of their four penalty corners in the period.
Both teams registered five shots in the first quarter, but W&J held Houghton without the shot for the rest of regulation. The Presidents fired five shots on goal over the final three quarters but were turned away each time.
W&J outshot Houghton 21-17 and held an 11-9 edge in shots on goal. Both teams forced 16 penalty corners, however Houghton held a 13-2 advantage in penalty corners and a 12-4 lead in shot during the overtime periods.
Dunn led the Red and Black with seven shots, three on goal.
Grace Kovalan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had three shots, two on cage.
Israel finished with nine saves and has not allowed a field goal since Sept. 21.
W&J (8-5, 3-2 Empire 8) travels to St. John Fisher next Saturday for a rematch of last year's Empire 8 championship game.
