Women's Soccer shuts out Geneva in PAC road win

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team picked up a key Presidents' Athletic Conference win by a 2-0 score at Geneva Friday night in Beaver Falls.

The victory kept the Presidents unbeaten in PAC play, as the Red and Black improves its conference mark to 3-0-3. W&J moves to 5-7-3 overall in 2019. The loss drops Geneva to 3-3-0 in conference matches and 8-7-0 overall.

The Presidents struck first offensively for a second straight game. W&J earned the initial scoring tally in the 19th minute when junior defender Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) scored off of a pass from classmate Marcy Saldivar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk). The goal was the first of the season for Johnston.

W&J maintained the one-goal advantage through halftime before adding an insurance goal in the 69th minute of play. Sophomore forward Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) scored an unassisted goal to strengthen the Presidents lead to 2-0.

That was more than enough support for a Presidents defense that has been strong in PAC play. The defensive unit has surrendered just two goals in 600 minutes of action in conference contests.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) posted her second complete game shutout of the season.

The Presidents held statistical advantages in shots (8-7), shots on goal (5-1) and corner kicks (5-1). Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset), Hahn and Johnston recorded two shots apiece to pace the offensive attack.

W&J enters the final week of the regular season in third place with 12 points in conference play. Geneva remains in fourth place with nine points while Chatham sits in fifth place with eight points. Grove City sits just in front of W&J, as the Wolverines enter their game Saturday with 12 points and a game in hand. The top four teams qualify for the upcoming PAC Tournament in early November.

The Presidents travel to Bethany College for a league tilt with the Bison on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Start time in West Virginia is scheduled for 4 p.m.
