Women’s Soccer Notches Scoreless Tie In PAC Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- In a rematch of last fall's conference tournament semifinal, the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Westminster in its Presidents' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener on Saturday.

Despite being outshot 20-3, the Presidents (2-7-1, 0-0-1 PAC) held the Titans (6-4-2, 1-0-1) off the scoreboard for 110 minutes to secure a point in the standings.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) turned away four Westminster shots in the first half while the Presidents were held without a shot.

W&J's lone shot attempt in regulation came in the 59th minute off the foot of Brianna McGowan (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) but was saved by Westminster goalie Camille Holzschuh.

Westminster fired 11 shots in the second half but were kept off the scoreboard. The Titans had an opportunity at an open net in the game's 75th minute following a corner kick, but defender Courtney Crivelli (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) prevented a goal by the left post. The following Westminster shot hit the crossbar and the Presidents escaped unscathed.

W&J's best scoring chance came in overtime with McGowan firing a shot on the ground from about 10 yards away, however Holzschuh was there to make the save.

Neither team could muster a shot in the second overtime. The match concluded in W&J's first draw of the season.

All seven of Westminster's shots on goal were stopped by Watkins, who collected her first shutout of the year. McGowan fired a team-high two shots on goal.

The Presidents look to pick up their first PAC win of the season Wednesday evening at home against Saint Vincent at 6:00 p.m.
