Women’s Soccer Edged by Grove City on Senior Day

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A second-half goal from Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) put the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team ahead, but Grove City scored twice in the final 15 minutes to hand the Presidents a 2-1 Senior Day defeat on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's game served as a sneak preview of the PAC Tournament, as the result hands Grove City 10-6-2, 7-1 PAC) the second seed in the conference tournament while the Presidents (6-8-3, 4-1-3 PAC) have secured the third seed for postseason play. This coming week, the two teams will battle for another 90 minutes in Grove City with a trip to the PAC final on the line.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first half with Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) recording for saves for the Presidents and Columbia Harkrader collecting two for the Wolverines.

Just over four minutes into the second half, Katie Hahn received a right-side pass in space, made a move around and past a defender through the center of the 18 yard box and blasted a shot past Harkrader to give the Presidents a 1-0 lead. Hahn has scored in three-straight PAC games and ranks second on the team with five tallies this season.

Hahn nearly sent across a second goal about minutes later, this time from the left side. She navigated through the Grove City backline and fired a shot from 10 yards out but was denied by Harkrader to keep the advantage 1-0.

The Wolverines found an equalizer from Michaela Burke with just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

With the score tied, Watkins made four critical saves to keep the game tied 1-1, but after stopping a breakaway opportunity from Burke, Grove City's Hailey Weinert collected the rebound and scored the go-ahead goal for the Wolverines in the 88th minute.

Grove City outshot the Presidents 22-11 and held a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.

Hahn and Wies Achtereekte (Deventer, The Netherlands) both managed two shots on goal. Watkins finished with 11 saves, her second-highest total of the season.

W&J will have the opportunity to avenge its only PAC loss of the season on Wednesday at Grove City in the PAC semifinals.
