WASHINGTON, Pa -- The Washington & Jefferson College football travels to upstate New York to face Ithaca College in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl at Butterfield Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
W&J holds a 3-2 record against Ithaca in the all-time series. However, the two teams have not met since 1994. The first meeting came in 1988 as the Bombers won, 34-3. W&J won the next season, 34-0, while Ithaca claimed a 48-27 victory in 1992. The Presidents then picked up a 42-7 win in 1993.
In their most recent head-to-head matchup, W&J edged Ithaca by a 23-19 margin in the semifinals of the in the 1994 NCAA Playoffs. That win advanced W&J to the Division III National Championship game, where the Red and Black fell 28-15 to Albion College.
W&J finished the regular season with a 7-3 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Presidents ended the regular season by blasting Waynesburg by a 50-14 score in a PAC Rivalry Week matchup. The Presidents will be making their 30th all-time appearance in postseason play. Mike Sirianni, the Presidents have qualified for the postseason in 15 of his 17 seasons.
W&J will be making its fourth appearance in an ECAC bowl game. The Presidents previously competed in the ECACs in 2003, 2010 and 2016. W&J holds a perfect 3-0 mark in ECAC competition. The Presidents beat Wilkes (41-19) in 2003, Franklin & Marshall (54-41) in 2010 and Brockport (38-31) in 2016.
Ithaca enters with an 8-2 record into Saturday's contest after a 32-20 win over Cortland in the 61st Cortaca Jug Game at MetLife Stadium on November 16. The Bombers finished tied for second place in the Liberty League with a 4-2 conference mark. Ithaca lost 44-42 at home last year to Utica College in the ECAC Scotty Whitelaw Bowl.
Both teams were ranked in the D3football.com Top 25 poll at various points of the season. W&J opened the season ranked before climbing as high as No. 12. Ithaca, who started the season unranked, rose to No. 8 after a 7-0 start. The Bombers then dropped back-to-back conference games to Union and RPI to fall out of the Top 25 and erase any hopes to play in the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs.
The two teams had one common opponent this season - Saint Vincent College. Ithaca opened the 2019 campaign on Sept. 7 by beating the Bearcats 66-28 in Latrobe. W&J bested Saint Vincent by a 42-10 margin just a few weeks back on Nov. 9.
