Baseball concludes spring trip against UW-Stevens Point

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team wrapped up its spring trip to Florida with a pair of losses to UW-Stevens Point on Friday, March 15, in Kissimmee, Fla.

Game One
The Presidents fell in game one by a 12-5 final score. W&J notched five runs on four hits, the team's second-highest scoring total during its trip.

The Red & Black opened the scoring with a homer from Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius) in the top of the first inning. The second batter of the game, Socha unloaded on his first pitch to send the ball over the left field wall.

Stevens Point answered by scoring five runs over the next two innings to go ahead 5-1. The two teams traded runs over the subsequent two frames, to set the score at 6-2.

W&J began to rally in the fifth, drawing the deficit to one, 6-5, with timely two-out hitting. Dante Dalesandro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) recorded the first run, scoring on a wild pitch. Justin Griffin (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) plated the next two runs with a two-RBI single through the left side. Socha scored from third and Spencer Howell (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) got home from second.

Unfortunately for the Presidents, these would be their final runs of the game. The Pointers added six more runs over the last four frames to secure the 12-5 win.

Ben Marsico (Bradford Woods, Pa./North Allegheny) started the game, going 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, and striking out two.

Game Two
The second game of the day saw the Red & Black fall by a 13-3 final score.

Stevens Point stormed out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning with a triple, a single and a home run.

The Presidents answered by driving home three runs of their own in the third frame. RBI singles by Dalesandro, and James Artale (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and an RBI double by Socha fueled the run.

For the second game in a row, however, the Pointers countered W&J's surge with a run of their own. Stevens Point stormed ahead 10-3 after the fourth and 13-3 after the sixth to seal the nonleague win.

The Red & Black's starting pitcher, Santino Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./OLSH), went 3.2 innings with two strikeouts. Jansen Eichenlaub (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), Mitchell Taufer (Washington, Pa./Bishop Canevin) and Matt Benicky (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) all pitched 1.0 scoreless innings in relief.

The Presidents will return to action on Tuesday, March 19, to challenge Point Park to a doubleheader, beginning with a 2 p.m. game one.
