Frostburg State tops women's lacrosse in non-conference match


FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Washington and Jefferson College women's lacrosse team closed non-conference play with a 17-5 loss to Frostburg State University Wednesday evening. 

The host Bobcats built a 7-1 lead with 3:47 left in the first half before the Presidents countered with a goal each from Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) to cut the deficit to four (7-3) at the 2:31 mark. Frostburg State would add a pair of goals to take a 9-3 edge into halftime. 

Frostburg State tallied the first four goals of the second half to extend the lead to 13-3 with 26:05 showing on the clock. Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) and Piper Schinsky (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) recorded a goal each in the second half to conclude the scoring for the Red and Black. 

The Bobcats held statistical advantages over the Presidents in shots (34-21), shots on goal (30-15), successful clears (15-10) and draw controls (14-8). LaRochelle led the offense with two goals and two draw controls while Bobrovnikova filled the stat sheet with a goal, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. 

Sara Maute (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) started and played the first half in net. The junior goalkeeper recorded seven saves in the loss. 

W&J (2-6) opens conference play when they host Chatham University on Saturday, March 30. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Presidents will host their annual charity game, fighting against cancer to raise funds and awareness through the HEADstrong Foundation's #GameHairHavoc campaign.
