Defense locks down Bethany as Women's Lacrosse claims PAC win


BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse raced out to a double-digit halftime lead as they registered a 15-3 road victory over Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match in West Virginia on Thursday evening. 

Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) tallied three goals apiece as the Presidents raced out to a 10-0 lead at halftime. After Bethany opened the second half with a goal, LaRochelle scored back-to-back goals to extend the advantage to 12-1 with 15:38 left in the second half.

Piper Schinsky (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton), Sherwood and Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) recorded the final three goals for W&J as the Red and Black earned its second straight conference win. 

The W&J defense continued its strong play, as the unit held the opposition into single digit goals for the fifth straight game.

Individually, LaRochelle scored four goals and added an assist. The junior added team highs in ground balls (four) and caused turnovers (four). 

Sherwood was strong in the midfield, as the freshman recorded eight draw controls, five points (four goals, one assist) and three ground balls. Bobrovnikova tallied four points (1g, 3a), four draw controls and four ground balls. Allison Onslow (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) chipped in four ground balls and three caused turnovers on the defensive end. 

Sam Lenfesty (Frederick, Md./Frederick) started in goal and made six saves in 60 minutes. Lenfesty improves her record to 3-0 in starts this season. 

The win impoves W&J to 4-1 in PAC play and 6-7 overall. The Presidents host Waynesburg University on Wednesday, April 24. Start time is slated for 7 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
