WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team used a balanced offensive approach to pick up a dominant 14-1 victory over Waynesburg on Wednesday, April 24, at Alexandre Stadium.Â
With the win, the Presidents improve to 7-7 overall this season and 5-1 in the PAC. With a 5-1 league record, the Red & Black have now clinched the two seed in the upcoming PAC Championship. The Yellow Jackets, on the other hand, drop to 0-13 overall and 0-6 in conference.Â
W&J turned up the offensive intensity early, going up 3-0 after the first 10 minutes.
Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) scored the first two goals off assists from
Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich), while LaRochelle scored the third goal.Â
The Presidents' offensive dominance continued throughout the remainder of the game, as they scored all 14 of their goals before Waynesburg got their first. In addition to the lead on the scoreboard, the Red & Black also held considerable advantages in shots (34-6), shots on goal (26-4), turnovers (30-19) and ground balls (31-16).
Leading W&J's attack was LaRochelle with nine points on six goals and three assists. The junior attack was one point shy of tying her career high. She has tallied nine-plus points in back-to-back games and in four of her last six contests. Â
LaRochelle is third in the PAC in both points (5.43) and goals per game (3.93). She has 55 goals this season, which is tied for seventh most in single-season program history and is just eight shy of tying her program record set in 2017.Â
Sherwood,
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) and
Jenna Allen (Sanford, Fla./Seminole) were all next on the team with four points each. Sherwood scored four goals, while Bobrovnikova dished out four assists, which tied a career high. Allen also tied a career high with four points on two goals and two assists.Â
Kayla Boulas (North Branford, Conn./North Branford),
Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Katelyn White (Linthicum, Md./North County) rounded out the Presidents' point-scorers. Boulas and Miller both finished with two points, while White tallied one.Â
On defense, Miller led the team with four caused turnovers, while four different players each had two. Sherwood and Miller both finished with a game-high six ground balls, with Sherwood also winning five draw controls.Â
Freshman keeper
Sam Lenfesty (Frederick, Md./Frederick) continued the impressive start to her rookie season with her fourth straight win. She made three saves and allowed just the one goal in a full 60 minutes.Â
The Presidents bring a close to the 2019 regular season with a home 12 p.m. match against Thiel on Saturday, April 27. This bout will serve as W&J's Senior Day.
