PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson college women's soccer team began its season with a 1-0 defeat to Ohio Northern at the Carnegie Mellon Tartan Cup on Friday evening.
The Presidents and Polar Bears both went scores through the first half, with ONU holding an 11-2 advantage in shots.
The Polar Bares tallied the game's only score in the 54
th minute on an outstanding individual effort by ONU's Jenna Fuller, who maneuvered around a pair of defenders and found the upper left corner of the net.
Ohio Northern, the preseason favorites in the Ohio Athletic Conference, outshot the Presidents 14-0 in the second half and 25-2 overall.
Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) and
Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) each recorded shots on target in the first half.
Sophomore
Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) posted two saves in a scoreless first-half goalkeeping effort. In the second half, freshman
Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) made eight saves in her collegiate debut.
W&J women's soccer concludes its opening weekend at Carnegie Mellon's Tartan Cup on Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. matchup with Aurora Univeristy.
