Presidents tripped up by Lions, 1-0

By Michael Zito, W&J Sports Information Student Assistant

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Penn State Altoona scored the lone goal of the match in the 71st minute of play to beat the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team by a 1-0 score in non-conference play Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, taking nearly 10 minutes for either team to register a shot on goal. The best chance of the night for the Presidents came from an Alex Molina (Bowie, Md./Reservoir) corner kick, which found a charging Thomas Davidson (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) before being saved by Tanner Yaw of Penn State Altoona in the 40th minute.

The visiting Lions broke the ice in the 71st minute when Jordan Francis headed the ball into the W&J net off a free kick opportunity to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The Presidents applied continuous pressure, mainly coming from Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) and Christian Payne (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview), who combined to register a total of seven shots on the net. However, the Presidents could not score a game-tying goal.

Junior goalkeeper Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) kept the Presidents in the game by registering four saves during 90 minutes of work. Though W&J outshot the Lions 15-7 the Presidents fell short in the match.

The Presidents hit the road for the next three games, as they travel to Hiram, Franciscan, and Marietta for respective non-conference tilts.  The Red and Black will challenge the Terriers to start that string of road trips on Saturday, Sept. 14. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
