W&J falls to Mount Union, #10 Carnegie Mellon at DoubleTree Invitational



PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team fell in straight sets to both Mount Union and No. 10 Carnegie Mellon University at the CMU DoubleTree Invitational Friday evening. 

Mount Union 3, W&J 0 (16-25, 15-25, 18-25) 

A strong hitting effort helped propel the Purple Raiders to the win by set scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-18. 

Leading the way offensively for W&J was junior outside hitter Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren), who tallied a team-best eight kills. Senior Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) added six successful attacks. Defensively, Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) collected 17 digs to lead the Presidents. Senior setter Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) registered 24 assists and added nine digs. 

As a team, Mount Union outpaced W&J in kills (39-27), assists (30-26), digs (58-54) and blocks (7.0-4.0). Madelin DiBease and Maria Ellesin both recorded double-digit kills to lead the Purple Raiders. 

Carnegie Mellon 3, W&J 0 (17-25, 14-25, 16-25) 

The host Tartans topped the Presidents in straight sets with scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-16 in the nightcap. 

Bernesser performed well against CMU, compiling nine kills and a .364 hitting percentage to pace W&J. Nelson added eight kills to finish a productive evening offensively. O'Brien tallied 20 assists and matched a team-best with nine digs. 

As a team, CMU held statistical advantages over W&J in kills (47-25), assists (43-25), service aces (7-2) and digs (40-31). The Tartans were paced individually by Vivian Beaudoin (11 kills) and Kayla Yew (17 digs). 

W&J returns to action on Saturday as they face Scranton at 1 p.m. before concluding the weekend with a match against Case Western Reserve at 5 p.m.
