STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team snapped a three-game scoreless streak but fell short at Franciscan 6-1.
The Barons (3-1-1) struck first with a tally in the fifth minute of action.
Sophomore
Dylan Mayanja (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) attempted W&J's only shot on frame for the half in the 25
th minute but was turned back by goalkeeper Brain Gaughan.
The Barons opened up a 2-0 lead with another goal in the 36
th minute.
Late in the first half,
Junior Mensah (Chantilly, Va./Broad Run) laced a cross from the left side inside the 18-yard box.
Alex Molina (Bowie, Md./Reservoir) went to play the ball off his chest but was pushed down from behind, awarding the Presidents a penalty kick.
Mensah converted on the PK for his first goal of the season in the game's 42
nd minute.
Franciscan found a third goal in the final minute of the half to carry a 3-1 advantage into the halftime break.
Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic) fired shots on frame in the second half in the 72
nd and 78
th minutes. He led the Presidents in shots (4) and shots on goal (2).
The Barons notched another three goals in the 53
rd, 57
th and 86
th minutes to come away with the 6-1 victory.
The Presidents outshot Franciscan 12-10 while the Barons held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. W&J collected nine corner kicks to none for Franciscan.
W&J (2-4) concludes its three-game road trip at Marietta on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
