Men’s Soccer Stopped At Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer traveled to the blue turf of Marietta and fell to the Pioneers in non-league action 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Marietta (3-4) scored twice in the first half and once in the second half. The Pioneers started the scoring in the 20th minute on a well-placed shot from beyond the right corner of the 18-yard box into the opposite upper 90.
 
In the 36th minute, Marietta sent a clear downfield that bounced beyond the President back line. A Pioneer collected the ball, dodged the goalkeeper and guided the ball into the net for a 2-0 Marietta advantage.
 
In the first half, Marietta held a 7-4 advantage in shots (4-1 SOG) with the Presidents' lone attempt on frame coming off the head of Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) in the game's seventh minute.
 
Early in the second half, a failed clear by the Presidents turned into a volleyed shot blasted into the back of the net for Marietta in the 49th minute.
 
In the second half the Presidents outshot Marietta 5-4, however the Pioneers outshot W&J in shots on goal 3-0.
 
Goalkeeper Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) started the game but left with an injury after collision with an offensive player in the game's 12th minute. Sophomore Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) finished the game in net for the Presidents, recording three saves over the contests' final 78 minutes.
 
For the game Marietta held an 11-9 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Pioneers doubled up the Presidents in corner kicks 6-3.
 
Thomas Einolf (Carlisle, Pa./Middletown) led the Presidents with three shots and Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic) added two more.
 
W&J (2-5) hosts Muskingum on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
