WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore
Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) and sophomore
Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic) tallied second half goals to lift the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Muskingum University in a non-conference match Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, as there were minimal scoring opportunities for each team over the first 45 minutes. All of the scoring took place in the second half as it was the Presidents who tallied the initial score in the 50th minute. Komaniak took a long pass from junior
Nicholas Maknoon (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and sent it past the Muskingum goalie to give W&J a 1-0 advantage.
The W&J lead lasted for a little more than 13 minutes of play when a foul in the box gave the visitors a penalty kick opportunity. The Muskies leading goal scorer, Jordan Work, was called upon and delivered a successful penalty kick to even the score at 1-1 at the 63-minute mark. Less than two minutes later it was the Presidents who would get a chance to regain the lead after a Muskies' player was called for a foul in the box. Feola took advantage, drilling the ball past the Muskingum goalkeeper to hand W&J a 2-1 advantage in the 65th minute of play. The goal was the first this season for Feola.
The Presidents were able to maintain the one-goal advantage through the remainder of the game to pick up the hard fought victory in a physical contest. Sophomore goalkeeper
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) turned away several offensive opportunities for the Muskies down the stretch, as Miller collected three saves over the final 20-plus minutes of the game.
W&J held statistical advantages over Muskingum in the contest: shots (16-9) and shots on goal (7-6) while the visitors held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) started and made two saves during the first half before giving way to Miller in the second half. Miller tallied three saves in 45 minutes to improve his record to 1-1 this season.
The win improves the Presidents to 3-5 overall while the Muskies drop to 6-2 in 2019.
W&J travels to Hood College for a non-league tilt with the Blazers on Saturday, Sept. 28. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
