GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team fell by a narrow 5-4 margin to defending conference champion Grove City College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Wednesday. 

The host Wolverines took two of the three points in doubles play, which ultimately helped to swing the match in their favor. Seniors Megan Berard (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Caitlin Shellhamer (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) won by an 8-5 score at third doubles to pick up the lone doubles win for W&J. 

The Presidents and Wolverines split the six singles matches to allow Grove City to earn the 5-4 victory. Sophomore Maya Krishnasamy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) secured a straight sets win at first singles, defeating Morgan Happe by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Meanwhile, freshman Isabella Goldman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at second singles.

Senior Jade Annaldo (North Kingstown, R.I./Scituate) tallied a victory at fourth singles, rallying back after dropping the first set to claim the second set 6-2 and earn a 10-8 decision in the third set tiebreaker. 

However, Grove City claimed third set tiebreaker wins at third singles, fifth singles and sixth singles to squeak out the victory. 

The loss drops W&J to 1-1 in PAC play and 2-4 overall. Grove City moves to 3-0 in the conference and 4-0 overall. The Presidents are off until they host Mount Union for a non-league contest on Friday, Sept. 27.
