Women's Soccer drops non-conference match to Carnegie Mellon


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision to visiting Carnegie Mellon University in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium Friday evening. 

The Tartans raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead behind a 14-2 shot advantage in the first half. Maddy Lui got the scoring started with a tally in the 13th minute of play. CMU added a pair of goals late in the first half, scoring in the 40th minute and the 43rd minute to strengthen its advantage. 

Carnegie Mellon carried that momentum into the second half, as the visitors added goals in the 47th, the 54th and the 58th minutes, respectively. 

The Tartans held statistical advantages in shots (27-2), shots on goal (21-2) and corner kicks (7-0). 

Sophomore Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) started in goal and registered seven saves during the first half. Freshman Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) tallied seven saves in the second half. 

Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) recorded the best scoring chance for W&J, as the senior hit the cross bar in the 33rd minute. 

W&J travels to Penn State Altoona for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
