ALTOONA, Pa. -- A pair of first half goals and a season-high eight saves by sophomore goalkeeper
Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) propelled the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Penn State Altoona Tuesday night.
The host Lions got on the board first with a goal from Arianna Mancini just 2:04 into the game. Mancini scored off a pass from Kierra Irwin to take an early 1-0 lead over W&J.
Later in the first half, senior
Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) found the back of the net for the first time in 2019, allowing W&J to tie the score at the 17:00 mark. Marteeny collected a corner kick in the box from sophomore
McKenna Lewis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and sent past the Altoona keeper from 10 yards out.
The Presidents took the lead when senior
Wies Achtereekte (Deventer, The Netherlands) grabbed a loose ball in the box and sent a shot into the open goal. The Achtereekte goal came in the 39th minute of play to give W&J a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half but the respective goalies were up to the challenge. Watkins made several saves down the stretch to preserve the victory for the Presidents. Watkins made back-to-back saves in the 75th minute before tallying another save in the 83rd minute. Watkins then stopped a final chance by PSA in the 88th minute.
Watkins registered eight saves in 90 minutes of action to improve her record to 2-2 this season. Marteeny paced the W&J offense with five shots, three of which were on goal.
PSA used a late barrage of shots to outshoot W&J by a 19-10 margin, which included a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. PSA held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks. However, Watkins stopped eight shots on goal while the Altoona goalie managed four saves.
The Presidents move to 2-5 overall while PSA drops to 2-5-1.
W&J travels into Ohio for a non-conference match with the College of Wooster on Saturday, Sept. 28. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
