Presidents Turned Back At Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team fell in its penultimate non-conference contest at Wooster 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Wooster (6-1-1) is ranked third in the Great Lakes Region according to the United Soccer Coaches regional rankings. The Fighting Scots were the fourth regionally-ranked the Presidents (2-6) have played in 2019 along with Ohio Northern, Ohio Wesleyan and Carnegie Mellon.
 
The Fighting Scots established an early lead with a goal in the game's second minute of action. Miura Wiley connected with Mila Zunich to hand Wooster a 1-0 advantage.
 
Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington), McKenna Lewis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) each attempted a shot on frame searching to tie the game in the first half, however Wooster goalkeeper Molly Hutter saved all three opportunities.
 
President goalkeeper Shalya Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) made a pair of saves in the 14th and 21st minutes to keep the 1-0 heading into halftime.
 
In the second half the Presidents were held without a shot, and on Wooster's 10th shot attempt of the second half the Fighting Scots finally broke through. Krenare Rakoci scored an insurance goal for Wooster in the 74th minute.
 
For the game Wooster outshot W&J 21-4 and held a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Fighting Scots tallied 11 corner kicks in total as well.
 
Watkins played all 90 minutes in goal and collected seven saves. Four different players registered a shot for the Red and Black.
 
W&J hosts Oberlin on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in its final tune-up before league play begins this weekend with Westminster.
