Freshmen Push Presidents Past Ferrum 2-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Goals by freshmen Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) and Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) in the game's first and 43rd minutes proved to be the difference in W&J's 2-0 victory over Ferrum on Saturday afternoon.

W&J wasted little time taking an early 1-0 advantage. Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) maneuvered the ball down the right side of the field and entered the ball into the circle. Once there, Diggan pushed a pass to the far left post where Crowley struck home her first collegiate goal.

After the goal on the game's first shot, neither team found the scoreboard for the rest of the first half. The Presidents controlled possession and momentum, tallying 14 shots and seven penalty corners over the course of the game's first 30 minutes.

Ferrum goalkeeper Mia Holmes made seven first-half saves to keep the Panthers within one.

Late in the third quarter, Hubbard worked the ball inside the shooting arc and connected with Diggan on the left post for her team-leading third goal of the season.

In the fourth quarter, Ferrum pushed to find a goal with consecutive penalty corner attempts. However the Panthers' only shot of the day was deflected by the stick of a President defender.

Diggan led the way for W&J with a goal, an assist and six shots with four on cage. Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor) and Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each registered four shots as well.

As a team W&J outshot Ferrum 27-1 and held a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. W&J goalkeeper Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and the W&J defense collected their first shutout of the season.

The Presidents return to action tomorrow with Empire 8 opponent Nazareth visiting Cameron Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
