WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Lindsey Diggan (Silver Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored for in the 15
th minute and
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) added a tally in the 48
th minute to power the Presidents to a 2-1 Empire 8 victory over Nazareth on Sunday morning.
The win pushes W&J back to .500 at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in E8 conference play. The victory puts the Presidents even with the Golden Flyers at 1-1 in league play and drops the Flyers to 4-5 overall.
The first quarter saw both teams' goalkeepers stave off early offensive chances.
W&J's
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) was turned away by Nazareth's Amanda Chuttey seven minutes into the contest. Shortly thereafter, President goalkeeper
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) made a pair of saves following consecutive penalty corners for the Golden Flyers.
In the final minute of the first quarter Diggan worked the ball inside the circle and centered the ball for Bobrovnikova whose attempted was blocked. Diggan pounced on the rebound just beyond the left post and blasted in her fourth goal of the season.
The Presidents put four shots on the cage in the second quarter but each attempt was saved by Chuttey to keep the W&J lead at one. In the final minute of the half, Nazareth earned a penalty corner but was thwarted by Israel and the President defense once again.
W&J attempted the only two shots of the scoreless third quarter.
Fromm put the Presidents ahead early in the fourth quarter with her second goal of the season.
Josephine Robson (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) inserted to
Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor), who passed back to Robson along the end line. Robson found Fromm in the center of the shooting arc and Fromm fired a past the diving Nazareth goalie to give W&J a 2-0 advantage.
Nazareth scored a penalty stroke goal in the 49
th minute to narrow the margin to one, however the Presidents held the Golden Flyers without a shot the rest of the way.
Diggan, who scored in the second-straight game, led the Presidents with three shots, all of which were on target.
Grace Kovalan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) also had three shots (two SOG). Israel collected the win and finished with four saves.
After a 2-0 weekend the Presidents hit the road for Wooster on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and continue Empire 8 play next Saturday at Elmira.
