Men’s Soccer Rolls in Home Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team posted its second-consecutive lopsided shutout win to begin the 2019 season.

The Presidents scored five second-half goals to run away with a 7-0 victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday evening.

The Red and Black, playing in their home opener, recorded their second-straight shutout and have outscored opponents 11-0 over the first two games of the season.

W&J wasted little time establishing an early advantage, with Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) finding Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) on a free kick for the game's first goal in the eighth minute of play.

The Presidents struck again later in the first half following a corner kick from Alex Molina (Bowie, Md./Reservoir). Molina served the ball to the far post, where Dylan Mayanja (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) redirected the ball into the middle where freshman Zach Bowser (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) was waiting to record his first collegiate goal in the 37th minute.

The Presidents carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime and owned a 12-0 edge in shots over the game's first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park) scored his second and third goals of the season in the 61st and 73rd minutes off of feeds from Komaniak and Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic).

Freshman John Appiah (Greenville, S.C.) and junior Alvaro Viadas (Burgos, Spain) scored their first collegiate goals in the 79th and 82nd minutes, respectively.

Ian Donlon (Lantham, N.Y./Albany Academies) earned the goalkeeping win, playing the games' first 61:34 and not surrendering a tally. Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) played out the final 28:26 and recorded two saves.

On the evening, the Presidents outshot UPG 23-3 (10-2 SOG) and are the only team remaining in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) without a loss.

W&J puts its 2-0 record on the line Saturday afternoon at Wooster.
