Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lewis scores as W&J shuts out Franciscan, 1-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore McKenna Lewis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) recorded her first collegiate goal and the W&J women's soccer posted a strong defensive effort to claim a 1-0 win over Franciscan University on Wednesday night.

The win was the first for interim head coach Kendra Jones

The goal by Lewis, which was the first for the Presidents in 2019, came off of a free kick in the 15th minute of play.

Both teams managed a few offensive opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half before the Presidents carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

W&J made the lead stand up in the second half as Franciscan couldn't net the equalizer. The Barons had a few opportunities from close range but were unable to convert.

Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) received the start in net and put together a clean sheet in the first half, as the sophomore goalkeeper recorded four saves during the first 45 minutes of play.

Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) played the second half in goal. The freshman matched Watkins with four saves of her own to preserve the victory for the Presidents.

Offensively, Grace Rangel (Bristow, Va./Patriot) registered a match-high four shots, which included three shots on goal. Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) tallied two shots for W&J.

Franciscan held a slight 11-10 advantage in shots and 8-5 edge in shots on goal. W&J held a commanding 6-1 advantage in corner kicks and a 8-4 edge in saves.

The win improves W&J to 1-2 while Franciscan falls to 1-1 thus far in 2019.

W&J plays its second of four straight home matches when they host Ohio Wesleyan for a non-conference game on Sunday, Sept. 8. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
