Women’s Soccer Drops Sunday Afternoon Showdown With OWU

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team fell 3-1 to Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action at Alexandre Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Battling Bishops built a 3-0 halftime advantage thanks to goals in the 3rd, 26th and 38th minutes of play.

The Presidents' only two shots of the first half came on a free kick from McKenna Lewis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) in the 27th minute and a header by Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) in the 44th minute. OWU goalkeeper Taylor Floyd stopped both attempts.

Early in the second half, Marcy Saldivar (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) corralled a goal just inside the 18-yard box, took aim and blasted home her first goal of the season.

Wies Achtereekte (Deventer, The Netherlands) looked to bring W&J within a single goal with a shot on frame in the 77th minute following a corner kick, but was turned away and the Presidents did not record another SOG for the afternoon.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) notched four of her season-high 10 saves in the second half to keep OWU off the scoreboard in the game's final 45 minutes.

Five of W&J's six shots were on goal with five different players each recording an attempt.

Women's soccer plays just two games in the next 12 days with Penn State Behrend coming to Washington, Pa. on Saturday Sept. 14 and Carnegie Mellon visiting the following Friday evening.
