WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team dropped a closely contested matchup by a 2-1 score to Kenyon College Sunday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
The visiting Ladies of Kenyon College tallied the game's initial goal with just three seconds to play in the opening quarter. Tara Shetty split the defense and scored off of a long pass by Carolyn Herbosa to give the Ladies a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes.
W&J quickly countered with a goal of its own in the second quarter. The Presidents took advantage of a penalty corner opportunity in the 24th minute of play, when senior
Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored off a pass from freshman
Josephine Robson (Leesburg, Va./Heritage). The assist was the second in as many games for Robson.
Kenyon would pull back in front just a few minutes later when Sarah Metzmaier scored off a pass from Shetty to give the visitors a 2-1 lead just before halftime.
The Presidents were unable to tie the game up in the second half, despite five penalty corner opportunities and five shots on goal.
Miller led W&J with the goal and three shots, two of which were on net. Junior goalkeeper
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) suffered the loss, making four saves during the 60 minutes of action.
W&J (2-2) hosts SUNY Geneseo for a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Sept. 14. Start time is slated for 1 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.
