WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team pulled out a 23-22 dual meet victory over McDaniel at Waynesburg on Wednesday evening.
The Presidents collected one win via pinfall, two major decisions, one decision and one forfeit to pull out the win.
The Presidents established an early 12-0 lead with victories in the opening weight classes.
Jake Walker (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) collected a forfeit at 285 pounds.
Manny Dovshek (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) pinned Nick Malinowski at 125 pounds to add to the Presidents' early advantage.
Following McDaniel victories at 133 and 141, the Presidents clung to a 12-11 advantage heading into 149 pounds.
Michael Heinl (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) faced a 1-0 deficit heading to the third period, but the national contender rallied back and collected a last-second takedown to record a 3-1 victory.
The Green Terror used a tech fall at 157 pounds to take a 16-15 advantage with four weight classes remaining.
Eighth-ranked 165 pounder
Jared Walker (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) picked up a 16-7 major decision to retake the team lead for the Presidents.
Hunter Neely (Cokeburg, Pa./Bentworth), an honorable mention at 174 pounds, earned another bonus point victory with a 14-5 major decision over Michael Bromley to put the Presidents head 23-16 with two weight classes to go.
Jaden Datz (Ruffs Dale, Pa./Southmoreland) and
Alex Donahue (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) were edged in the final two weight classes but didn't allow any bonus points for McDaniel, allowing the Presidents to escape with the non-conference victory.
The Presidents move to 3-1 on the season in dual competition. W&J travels to Louisville this weekend to take part in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Duals. The Red and Black square off with No. 14 RIT on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
