MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team reeled off four-straight second half goals to take a lead it would never relinquish as the Presidents downed Marietta 13-12 for their first win on the season.
Marietta broke a 6-6 halftime tie with a goal less than three minutes into the second half. W&J responded with four goals over a seven minute span to re-take the lead for good.
Freshman
Becca Ghion (Sutersville, Pa./Yough) provided the game-tying goal at 27:01 to play and the go-ahead goal less than 10 seconds later.
Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) each found the back of the net as the Presidents extended their advantage to a game-high three goals at 10-7.
After nearly seven minutes of scoreless action, Marietta responded with back-to-back tallies to pull back within one with 12:13 to play.
Bobrovnikova provided breathing room for a moment, but Marietta responded with a goal seconds later to stay close 11-10.
Miller pushed the game out of reach with consecutive scoring strikes with 8:54 and 6:15 to play, as the Presidents staved off a late push by Marietta, who scored twice in the final five minutes.
The first half saw neither team lead by more than one goal as the first 30 minutes featured six ties and 6-6 halftime score.
Freshman
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) led W&J offensively with five points (two goals, three assists) and collected five ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Miller turned in a four-goal effort with four cased turnovers and three ground balls. Bobrovnikova had a team-high seven draw controls to go with three goals.
Ghion scored her first collegiate goal in the first half and added two more in the second for good measure.
Sam Lenfesty (Frederick, Md./Frederick) made seven saves, collected four ground balls and recorded the win between the pipes.
Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) nabbed six draw controls, four caused turnovers, four ground balls and one goal.
W&J owned an advantage in shots (27-24), shots on goal (23-19) and draw controls (17-10).
The Presidents host Medaille Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
