Strong second quarter guides Mount Union past W&J


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Behind strong play in the second and third quarters, the University of Mount Union picked up a 15-7 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team in non-conference play Saturday at Alexandre Stadium. 

The Purple Raiders outscored the Presidents by a 10-2 margin in the middle quarters of en route to the win. W&J and Mount played to a 3-3 tie after the first quarter and both teams scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter. 

Back-to-back goals by Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and Pat Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) late in the first quarter tied the score at 3-3. Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) scored off of a pass from Brunner early in the second quarter to give the Presidents their only lead of the game at 4-3. The Purple Raiders used a 6-0 spurt over the final 7:43 of the second quarter to take a 9-4 advantage into halftime. 

Mount Union scored five of the six third quarter goals to take a commanding 13-5 edge after 45 minutes of play. Strain tallied the lone W&J goal of the third quarter, as he scored off another pass from Brunner. Mandak registered a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for the Presidents.

Strain, Brunner and Mandak were the focal points of the offense for W&J. Strain finished with five points (3 goals, 2 assists) while Brunner added a four-point effort (1 goal, 3 assists). Mandak finished with three goals and an assist. Defensively, James Deiuliis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) caused five turnovers while Shawn Wallbillich (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) led the team with five ground balls. 

Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) started and worked all 60 minutes in goal. The senior registered 20 saves in net. That marks the fourth time in six games this season that Cohen recorded at least 20 saves. 

Mount Union held key advantages in face-off wins (20-6) and ground balls (45-30). The loss drops W&J to 1-5 overall while Mount Union improves to 4-2. 

The Presidents travel east to face Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday, March 11. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
