LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team suffered a pair of defeats on Sunday at the PFX Spring Games. Sunday's games were contested at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla. W&J fell 5-1 in the opener to the Vikings and then lost 2-0 to Penn State Hazelton in the late game.
Game One – North Park 5, W&J 1
The Presidents got on the board first when
Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo Ridge) doubled home
Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) to give the Red and Black a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
North Park responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. All three Vikings runs came with two outs, including a two-run double to make the score 3-1. The Vikings tallied another run with two outs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Vikings concluded the scoring with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Down to their final three outs, the Presidents threatened in the bottom of the frame. Charlton singled to lead off the inning.
Following a fielder's choice out,
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) singled up the middle to put a pair of runners on.
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. However, the Presidents were unable to capitalize and the next two hitters were retired to end the game.
Charlton and Stout recorded two hits apiece in the loss.
Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) started and suffered the setback in the circle. She worked 6.0 innings, allowed five runs (four earned) and struck out two.
Game Two – Penn State Hazelton 2, W&J 0
The Presidents struggled to put together an offensive threat against Hazelton. Five different W&J players finished with a hit apiece.
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Hazelton drew a walk and then used an RBI triple to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. W&J came close to tying the score in the top of the fourth inning when Eckenrode singled to lead off the frame. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Eckenrode was thrown out at a close play at the plate on a single by McCleester. The out at the plate denied W&J the opportunity to even the score.
The Lions tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the edge to 2-0. W&J put two runners on in the seventh inning but could not push across a run.
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) worked 6.0 strong innings in the circle. The sophomore allowed two runs on five hits. Kulka struck out three Lions hitters.
