W&J falls to Wittenberg, beats Wheaton during Monday’s action at the Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. -- A trio of seniors led the Washington & Jefferson College softball team to a 4-2 win over Wheaton College (Mass.) as part of a split Monday afternoon at the Spring Games in Florida. The Presidents suffered a 12-6 setback to Wittenberg University in the opener on Monday.

Game One – Wittenberg 12, W&J 6

The Presidents battled through a rough start to the game against the Tigers. Wittenberg took advantage of a few early defensive miscues to score six runs in the top of the second inning. W&J battled back to score a pair in the bottom of the frame.

Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) walked and scored on a double by Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western). Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) singled home Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) to make the score 6-2.

Wittenberg added another six-spot in the top of the third inning. All six runs were unearned and scored with two outs. W&J scored a pair in the bottom of the inning. The Presidents took advantage of a two hit batters, a walk and an error during the inning.

W&J tacked on an unearned run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 12-5. Labbe concluded the scored in the bottom of the seventh when the sophomore doubled home Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley).

Eckenrode and McCleester finished with two hits apiece to pace the offense.

Game Two – W&J 4, Wheaton (Mass.) 2

W&J bounced back with a solid all-around performance to earn a comeback victory against the Lyons. Wheaton used a pair of singles and a pair of stolen bases to open up a 1-0 lead after three innings of play.

The Lyons extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Wheaton used a leadoff double and an eventual wild pitch to tack on the second run.

A fifth-inning error by Wheaton helped ignite a W&J rally. Lexie Creyer (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) cut the Lyons lead in half with an RBI double that scored pinch runner Kate Barone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). After a pitching change, Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) helped herself with a clutch two-out single to plate Creyer and even the score at 2-2.

Lapia followed two batters later with a two-run double down the right field line to give W&J a 4-2 edge. Wheaton put at least one runner on base in the sixth and seventh innings but Fuertes nailed down the victory.

The winning battery, Fuertes and Creyer, also got the job done at the plate. The duo combined for four of the eight hits and two of the four RBI.

Fuertes put together a fine effort in the circle to move her record to 2-2. The senior allowed just two runs and scattered seven hits in the win.

The split moves the Presidents overall record to 4-4.

Up Next: After enjoying a day off on Tuesday, the Presidents return to action with a pair of games on Wednesday at Legends Way in Clermont. W&J faces Montclair State (9 AM) and UMASS Dartmouth (1:45 PM) on Wednesday during their penultimate day of the trip.
